Updated: Jul 23, 2024

midlife crisis

The idea of a midlife crisis is often misunderstood and sometimes even joked about but can be a reality for many. Let’s unpack what it really means to have a midlife crisis, whether it’s a real thing, the signs to watch out for, and most importantly, how to prevent one and bounce back if you’re already in the middle of it.

What Is a Midlife Crisis?

The term “midlife crisis” was first coined by Elliot Jacques in 1965. It refers to a period of emotional turmoil in middle age, typically between 40 and 60, characterized by a strong desire for change. People start reflecting on their life achievements and realize they might have fewer years ahead of them than they’ve already lived. But is a midlife crisis real? Psychologists are divided—some argue it’s a cultural construct, while others believe it can be a genuine psychological phenomenon.

Signs of a Midlife Crisis

How do you know if you’re having a midlife crisis? Here are five common indicators:

  1. Intense Self-Reflection and Doubt: Constantly questioning your life’s choices, achievements, and future.

  2. Desire for Major Life Changes: This might be a new job, a new relationship, or a complete lifestyle overhaul.

  3. Increased Frustration and Restlessness: Feeling trapped or unsatisfied with your current situation.

  4. Emotional Instability: Mood swings, increased anxiety, or even depression.

  5. Physical Changes: Unusual concern with your appearance or health, leading to drastic changes like new diets, workouts, or cosmetic procedures.

Preventing a Midlife Crisis

Can we prevent a midlife crisis? I think so! Here are some strategies:

  1. Reevaluate Your Goals: Ensure they align with your current values and stage of life.

  2. Nurture Relationships: Maintain and nurture relationships with family, friends, and partners for support and perspective.

  3. Prioritize Well-Being: Focus on mental, physical, and emotional well-being through exercise, hobbies, and self-care.

  4. Keep Your Mind Active: Engage in learning new skills or taking on new projects.

  5. Reflect and Adjust: Regularly check in with yourself and make adjustments as needed.

Bouncing Back from a Midlife Crisis

If you’re already in the thick of what you perceive to be a midlife crisis, here are some steps to take:

  1. Acknowledge Your Feelings: It’s okay to feel anxious and mixed up. Recognize your emotions without judgment.

  2. Seek Professional Help: Talking to a therapist or counselor can provide guidance during this challenging period.

  3. Reconnect with Passions: Revisit old hobbies or discover new ones.

  4. Make Small Changes: Instead of overhauling your entire life, start with small, manageable changes. This aligns with my 1% shift strategy, emphasizing small, consistent changes leading to significant improvements over time.

  5. Focus on Gratitude: Practicing gratitude can shift your perspective and help you appreciate the positives in your life.
